So stupid...

I'm using Word 2007.

I have a document that begins with a cover page, a title page, and a
copyright page. Therefore, page one should begin on page 4.

When I go to INSERT > Page Number> the document gives me the option of
adding the number as a footer. I choose bottom page center.

SO page 4 fills in. However, I don't want my numbering to start on page four
I want Chapter 1 (which begins on the actual page 4 in the document) to begin
on page one. So I click the Page Number button and click "format number".

I tell the program to insert the number and begin with "1".

Number one appears at the bottom of the screen. However, when I go to the
next page, which is technically number 5 but should be labeled page 2, "page
5" appears on both pages PAGE "2" and the actual "page 3".

So I go up to page three and I delete "5" from the page. Then I go back to
"page 2" and now "page 5" is erased. So I type "page 2" again, and now "page
2" is on page 3.

this goes on and on back and forth with all of the pages. Somehow, the
"sections" are linked together. I disable the "link to previous section"
button but somehow, it is still linked to something.

I managed to accomplish this feat before but I don't know HOW I did it.

Bear in mind, I have a different odd/even header.

I don't understand how or why the header and footer "EDITING" feature is
linked together. It is not linked together in Corel. When I open "footer"
only the footer is open. What I do with the footer is not connected with
anything I do with the header. I would still use Corel were it not for an
unforgiveable purchase of a new computer that won't run the version of corel
that I was using.

I should be able to click "footer" and have my n umbers appear in the proper
succession from its insertion point. however, I am stuck with odd/even
section issues because my header is inexplicably linked to the footer. WHY?

Is there a way around this issue? It is annoying and I have wasted five
hours of my night dealing with this.

I entirely sympathise with your dilemma! Every time I try to do this I tear
my hair out!
I think you need to post in a WORD group for the best help rather than a
generic Office one.

Usually what happens is your sections are still linked and when you change
it you change the previous section. Then when you change that section the
changes are reflected in the other sections and the vicious cycle begins.

The key to this is to first is Unlink all sections that should not be linked
and Link those sections that should be linked. Also note the header and
footers are not linked. You can have headers that are linked across all
sections and also have footers that aren't linked. If you want to unlink
just the footers you can -- just make sure your insertion point is in the
footer prior to using the Link to Previous command.

I usually verify this again (using the Next Section/Previous Section
buttons) after Linking/Unlinking since I occasionally miss one. Once you
have verified your Linked/Unlinked headers/footers, start at the first
section, insert your page numbers, and make your formatting changes. Process
to the next section and repeat.
