Solutions to 2003 running very sluggishly and slowly

My 2003 outlook is running very very sluggishly, with particular respect to
the email sending/returning/forwarding?

I do not have any of the updates or anything installed apart from what came
with the original disc.

Could this be causing a slow down? I dont think it is likely but I thought
to ask.

from the same issues.
