Some Footnotes in Tables Do Not Display or Print

Michael Leu

I have a document that is comprised primarily of two-column tables (the left
column being used for a topic or theme statement and the right column being
the associated discussion). I edit this document on two different systems - a
desktop with W2000/Word 2002 SP3 & a laptop with XP/Word 2003.

I have inserted footnotes in several places in these tables. Some of them
display and print correctly at the bottom of the page. Others, even though
they are clearly embedded in the table, never show up anywhere on any
displayed or printed page. I haven't yet been able to determine what
characteristic causes some to be there and others to not. I have tried
breaking up rows of the table into individual tables, but that doesn't make
any difference. The document displays and prints the same in both of my
versions of Word. Any help on getting this corrected will be greatly
appreciated.

Table footnotes tend to appear on the last page of the table, I believe.

presumably Hi Suzanne -

I might be able to live with that (since I could break a single table into
successive smaller ones if I had to). However, in this case, those missing
footnotes do not display anywhere in the document even when I do that. I
don't remember which computer I made the initial entry on for those. Is it
possible that Word 2002 is doing something it shouldn't, and Word 2003
doesn't recognize or correct it?

Is it possible you created endnotes rather than footnotes? When you say
"anywhere in the document," do you mean *anywhere*? And what view is this
in?

No - they are definitely footnotes. I can locate each one with
Edit-Find-Footnote Mark, the numbering is sequential, and I can see the text
when I mouse over the footnote mark.

In Print layout, some of the footnotes appear and some of them don't. I have
even printed out a hard copy of the entire document, and they don't appear
anywhere on the printed document.

Is there a chance the 'missing' ones have somehow got formatted as Hidden.

Check Tools > Options > Print tab > Include with Document section > Hidden
text - and see if they print then.

If you'd like to send a sample/portion of the problem doc, I'll have a look.

I would love to send you the document. The reply function here doesn't seem
to allow attachments, so how do I do that? Feel free to e-mail me directly at
(e-mail address removed) if that's a better way to go.

If you click on my name in any of my messages, you'll get my User Profile
(which seems to have gotten lost, because I'm pretty sure I did create one
at some time); it shows my email address as a clickable mailto: link. If you
were reading this in an NNTP newsreader (as I am), you would see my email
address in the body of the post.
