Some questions on documents

Hi,

My team has the following queries while using documents-
1. Where are they checked out to?
2. How do I open the document after I check out? Usually when I check
out, it shows the document as checked out but it is not open on my
machine.
3. Is it possible to assign authority of delete to only the owner of
the document? If yes, how?
4. If I want somebody, who does not have access to the server, to view
the document, what is the fastest way to attach documents (without
having to first save to hard disk and then resend it)?

I'd appreciate your responses.

Thanks,
AS

Working of the top of my head / memory but hope this is some help
1. & 2. I believe the document record in WSS/SPS is only flagged as
Checked out. To open it use the menu 'Edit in Ms Word (or Excel)' or
click the link to the properties page and edit document. Note: If you
just do the latter the document is effective checked ou to you anyway.
Other users will get told its under your control and get a read only
version. Remember also that if version control is on every time you
save you will get a new version. I have not seen where you get any
option to replace or simply save it as the current version.
3. Sounds difficult and I would guess not. You could try using the
Document Library security to limit the deletion etc. but I don't think
its possible to link this delete to the document creator.
4. Don't quite understand?
Final comment the document library in WSS is far from a Document
Management system. I don't recomend trying to use it as such.
