Sort Error

I'm a pretty experienced excel user, but this one is driving me nuts,
i'm on XL 2003. I am attempting a multicolumn sort of raw data. i
have done this sort of the same data many, many times without error. i
am on a new machine and a new Office installation so i am thinking its
a setting somewhere. When i sort the data it simply is ignoring the
order on a handful of the items in the list and not correctly sorting
it.
Any ideas?

What you think you are seeing in the cell is not what is really there, or not
of the same data type.

thats what i was thinking... there are only 4 items in the first list
so i did a find/replace and changed the values to 1,2,3 or 4. Then
sorted by only that column, and got the same result. i also did text
to columns and converted all the data in that column to numerical to
check. any other fixes i could try... this is hardcoded data, no
formulas.

K... i'm an idiot, i had done an advanced filter, unique items only, a
bit earlier and this grouped the data, and even though i had clicked
advance filter > show all, it had not ungrouped the data. and would
not allow sort to split them up. thanks for your help anyway. so
stupid.

Glad you got it working.
