Sort problems

A new workbook with imported data keeps 'Not Responding' when I try to sort,
any idea why?

It might be easier just to post the workbook for us to take a look! I
could be a number of things

I've had much larger workbooks sort with no problems, and this is a tad
large to post on a modem line.

Tell us what columns are populated. Which rows are populated. What is the
active cell when you try to sort. Exactly what do you do to tell Excel to
sort. Exactly. Do you first select all the data? Any of it? What do you
do then. Exactly. What does Excel do? Exactly. Any messages? HTH

OK
I've got columns A -AB populated across, and down rows 1 - 9724.
If I press ctrl/end I end up in row 9724 column AD for some reason.
I have repeatedly tried deleting columns AC and AD, and that doesn't help -
but if the machine thinks that's where the end of the sheet is then
something is wrong, to my way of thinking at least.

The problem comes when I try to do a sort on one column (which contains just
letters, no numbers).
I highlight the whole sheet, then Data, Sort, My list has header row, select
the correct column and click OK.
The blue progress bar zooms across the screen and then stops just before the
end, and nothing happens.
I have left it alone for up to 10 minutes to see if it is a time thing, but
eventually I have to resort to ctrl/alt/del to see: Microsoft Excel
StarterPack (Not Responding).
Selecting End Task is the only way out.
I have larger workbooks which sort with no problem, so it can't be a memory
thing.
But what it is has got me stuck.

Does that help you figure it out?
