Sorting my Project by ID

I want to indent an inserted task and each time I do it the task disappears
because the project is being automatically sorted by ID. How do I prevent
this?

Hi Paul,

I'm not sure I follow your question exactly. When you say the task
"disappears" what do you mean? Does the task name appear but the task bar
disappears from your view? This is most likely do to the option "Autolink
inserted or moved tasks" from the Schedule tab of the Tools > Options dialog
box. I suggest disabling that option. When you insert a task between two
tasks that are linked in a Finish to Start relationship, the newly inserted
tasks is automatically linked in a F to S relationship.

You are correct, projects are sorted by ID, but if you insert the task it
should update the ID numbers of all other tasks. Could you please explain
further what you mean perhaps we can be more help.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Hi Julie,

If I have for example a 100 line Project and I insert 2 more lines below
line 10 (for example). Then I indent the second one so that the first
becomes a summary (and these are now ID 101 and 102) theh as soon as I select
indent task 102 disappears from view and turns up below task ID 100.

I have tried to recreate this with a simple and new Project and I can't...!
It works as I would expect, so I am very frustrated that I can't do anything
with this one. I eventually worked around it by deleting them both and
putting them at the bottom of the Project, then ran a custom sort to get them
where I wanted.

It must be something I have done but I can't figure it out..!

I hope that explains my problem a little better but please don't waste too
much time on it as I have worked around this now.
Thanks

Paul.

Paul,
Pardon my stepping in but I may have a clue to your problem. Based on
your example, it appears you may be automatically sorting on the Unique
ID field - not the ID field. Either that or there is more to the
auto-sort criteria than simply the ID (like maybe the Outline Level
field).

I would check the criteria of the sort function and also verify which
"ID" field is being sorted. Then if you still have a problem, post back
with more details.

Thanks both.

I have checked the field and have noticed that since I used a custom field
the problem has gone away so it must be something to do with the sort values
although I can't replicate it anymore.

If it happens again I will post back after I've tried your suggestions - my
feeling is it's user error..!

Thanks

Paul.

Paul,
You're welcome. It should be real easy to look at the sort criteria but
I guess the problem solved itself - scary.
