Sorting

I have about 1000 names entered in my excel worksheet.. I am trying to sort it, but when I go to Data > Sort, sort is greyed and unavailable. How can I get this function to be available again?

Is the spreadsheet protected - look under Tools,

Protection - is one of the option Unprotect Sheet or
Unprotect Workbook
