sound for new mail is default computer ding

I have lost my ability to change the sound that is played
when outlook receives email. It might be throught
windows, because I no longer get the music for beginning
Windows or shutting down. I can choose different .wav
files and even preview them without any problem, but then
when in email, it just plays the really old computer
system beep.
