Sound issues after installing Office 2008

Was wondering if anyone has run into this issue.

Just did an install of Office 2008 and did all the updates to 12.1.2.
I have a 13" Powerbook G4, 1.33 Ghz, 768 MB ram, OS X 10.4.11.

After the install, the sound from all applications is intermittent or
nonexistent - Quicktime, web pages, Audacity, and even the "blurps"
from the volume control.

For example, if I'm playing a MP3 file in Quicktime or iTunes or
playing a video in YouTube, the sound goes in and out for a few
seconds every few seconds. Or, sometimes, I might not hear any sound
at all for ten or fifteen seconds.

I checked the activity monitor and didn't notice anything unusual. Is
Office putting something in startup or the system that's interfering
with some resources?

Any ideas?

I'm annoyed to no end by this.

Office does nothing with sounds other than adding a few for Entourage.
Those are located within Office itself and are not added to anything
system wide. The fact that this happened after you updated Office should
be coincidental. Possibly, you already had a problem and the install
just triggered it.

Because this is affecting everything on your computer I suggest you post
your question in the Apple discussion forums found here

Hope this helps!

Have you checked the Apple site for any firmware updates for your Mac?

You might also try applying the 10.4.11 Combo updater - the combos are far
more effective than the Software Update downloads.

First check Entourage --> Preferences "Notification". Make sure that the
appropriate sounds are checked. Click the speaker icon next to them to test
your sound setup .If you can hear sounds from other applications, but not
the Entourage sounds have a look at this Apple Knowledge Base article.

An application may have set your audio output settings too high. If that
fails and you have GarageBand, try opening and closing it.
