Sound stutters and distorts during Outlook send/receive mode

I've had an unusual problem crop up in which sound from my computer stutters
and breaks up while Outlook 2007 is sending or receiving e-mail. This has
happened with two different sound cards and it doesn't occur when I'm
downloading files in Internet Explorer or otherwise surfing the 'Net. It also
doesn't matter if the sound source is iTunes, Internet Radio, or Skype; the
issue is the same. I have the latest drivers for my sound card and my
integrated network interface. Has anyone else encountered this problem
before? Here is my system configuration:

• ASUS P5KPL-CM Micro ATX Motherboard
• Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Quad-Core Processor
• ASUS V72 CPU Cooler
• Antec SmartPower 500W Power Supply
• Western Digital WD7500AAKS-00RBA0 750 GB SATA Hard Drive
• ASUS DRW-2014L1T SATA DVD-RW Drive
• Shuttle PC23 25-in-1 USB 2.0 Card Reader
• G.Skill F2-8500CL5-2GBPK DDR2 1066 Memory (2 x 2GB)
• VisionTek ATI Radeon HD 4850HD Graphics Card
• HT Omega Claro Halo Sound Card
• Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate w/ SP1
• PC Tools Spyware Doctor with AntiVirus
• PC Tools Firewall Plus

I'd appreciate any advice you can give. Thanks!

Bootup in safe mode & retest, if all ok then possibly a background program
is the culprit, its unlikely to be an outlook problem, maybe uninstall all
PC tools, configure the win firewall, then retest.

Both iTunes and Skype have compatibility issues with Outlook 2007.

I apologize for not responding sooner. You were right; the culprit was my PC
Tools security software. I uninstalled it and went back to Norton Internet
Security 2009 and the sound problem is gone entirely. I guess the combination
of Outlook 2007 and my security software was consuming too many resources and
affecting the sound. In any case, all is well now. Thank you for your help!

You were correct; PC Tools was the problem. I replaced it with Norton
Internet Security 2009 and the sound issue disappeared. Thanks for your help!
