Source of Angle Brackets <> Content in To: Field

I posted this question in Exchange Admin and it was suggested that
this might be a better forum. To see the post in its entirety there,

To sum up:
We have a few entries in our address list (Global) which show the
correct email address followed by incorrect (outdated) information in
angle brackets. The incorrect entries show up when a user types the
alias in the "To:" field. The incorrect entries are old names for the
accounts which have been renamed in Active Directory on an Exchange
Server. An example could be an employee who has married and her last
name has changed.
e.g. if Mary Smith is now a Jones and I go to type Mary Jones in the
To: field, I get the following Mary Jones <msmith>. When I press enter
(or Tab) the angle brackets and their contents disappear.
What I am looking for is where does Outlook get the string that is
contained within the angle brackets.
It is not from Contacts, the new or old names do not exist there.
It is not from a personal address book, I don't have one.
The only place the address exists is in the Global Address List in the
address book in Exchange.
I have turned this thing inside out trying to find msmith.
The same phenomenon occurs for some Security Groups which are used as
Distribution Lists. The angle brackets contain information that
occurred before the company changed its name which is before my time
here.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
