Before running SP1 I put the original Office CD in the
CD driver, then run SP1 and it installed without problems.

What is an Office 2007 RTM image? I have Office 2007 pre-installed on my
Sony Vaio and have the OEM disks here.

Hi Nick,

If you have the Office 2007 CD in the drive (assuming that's the drive registered as the installation point) and then try to
run/apply Office 2007 SP1 does that get past the 78F error?

An RTM (Release to Manufacturing), i.e. the 'final' Office 2007 product release :), can be the disk or a copy of the disk on a
harddrive.

Hi Bob

That is exactly what I did. I put in the OEM Office 2007 CD. I then ran the
repair function. When the repair was successfully completed, I left the CD in
the drive and ran SP1 install, but it again failed with a code 78F error
message.

The only thing I have not done based upon other recommendations is to
install Windows Installer 3.1, because Vista was not shown as a valid OS. I
therefore assumed that Vista already has the equivalent built in.

I only bought this Sony Vaio 2 months ago, with Vista and Office 2007
pre-installed. I also use BitDefender Security Suite, but otherwise have
rigorously avoided installing other software such as registry cleaners.

Nick

Automatic installation of SP 1 on an XP partition and a 32-bit VISTA
partition occurred without a hitch. Constant Code 78F failed installation of
SP 1 occurs on the 64-bit VISTA partition. I will insert the orginal Office
2007 Utlimate CD to see if that works.

With the Office 2007 Ultimate CD inserted, that attempted installation also
failed with another Code 78F error displayed.

Microsoft should be correcting this SP1 Code 78F failed installation problem
instead of all of us going through all of this time wasting hit and miss
baloney.

Microsoft tech support will work on SP1 for free even if your Office 2007
free support has expired. Reason according to Microsoft: SP1 is a critical
update and all Microsoft critical updates are supported for free.
