SP3 for Office 2000 impairs Outlook 2000's IMAP client functionality?

Since I installed SP3 for Office 2000, Outlook 2000 refuses to
download "headers only" from an IMAP4 server. Instead, it copies the
whole e-mails (headers and bodies) from the server.

The user can't see what's on the server before downloading
or choose which e-mails to download. All e-mails are downloaded
automatically.

This malfunction has been observed with Windows Workstation 4 (SP6a)
and under Windows XP Professional (SP1), haven't tested it with any
other OSs, though. Must admit that I had very little time to try to
get it working under Windows XP.

Is there a solution to this faulty behaviour? Has anyone seen Outlook
2000 (SP3) working correctly as an IMAP4-Client, i.e. being able to
download "headers only"? That would indicate a deficiency in the
server software instead. (The server software which Outlook talks to
in this case is called Cyrus, seems to have been developed at the
Carnegie Mellon University).

Best regards,

G.
