Space bar deletes Characters

When editing a word 2003 document, all of a sudden my space bar, when hit
deletes the letter in from of my cursor, what setting do I need to change
this. thanks.

I take it that not only does the spacebar replace a character with a space,
but any character key, when pressed, replaces a character with the new
character. If this is so, then you are in overwrite mode and need to be in
insert mode. Double click the OVR in the middle of the bar right at the
bottom.
