Space requirement

Dear all;

I would like to enquire how much the space capacity occupy the hard disk if
you just install Microsoft Office Word, Excel and Powerpoint 2007 and with no
installation file install on the machine. I plan to buy one laptop with only
4GB HD space and only about less than 1GB free space.

Thank You.

Office 07 on my machine takes 305 MB for the Office 2007 (Word, Excel & PPT
in Home & Student version) folder but of course that is not all the space
that is required for the install since the install also places folders with
different information under the user name in Documents & Settings. It also
places "connections" with the OS. All of these take hard drive space. MS
web site for my version of software says it requires 1.5 GB of space.

With a 4 GB drive and < 1 GB free, even if you could get it installed with
the OS required to run the suite (XP w/SP2 or Vista) you won't be able to do
much with it. You wouldn't be able to save many files to the drive and any
temporary files that either the OS or the program created wouldn't have a
lot of real-estate for it.

Find a machine with a larger HD.

Dear LVTravel;

Yes, I do aware that I can't save files on it. In fact I already prepare for
this. I will use external drive to save documents. That laptop is just for
typing documents and my presentation work. Nothing else. It has no dvd drive
etc, and is very very portable and small size. Now I am just wandering if it
can be installed since my version of Office 2007 mention requires 2Gb of
space which I dont. I have one ready installed on my other Compaq Laptop and
it only occupies 367MB. So I guess it will work but a friend of my says to
run the installation, it will need 2Gb as mention and the install size is
another story.

So I think I will need to clarify on that. To run&start the installation,
does it really need 2GB space?

The installation process require more free space than that that is finally
used
The initial installation process will check free space & if it deems there
is insufficient it will exit

Oh dear.. Look like I can't have office 2007 installed but office 2003 where
it only require 400Mb to start installation. Is there anyone here have tried
installed office 2007 on a system with less than 1Gb of HD space and manage
to get everything installed? I am always curious on why starting installation
would require such a big space when the output of the software is just 300 -
400Mb!

Something to do with writing temp files to hd & utilising the swap file, at
a guess
PS I have Office2003, whilst the Office folder group is some 380mb according
to MS 400mb is required & more in some cases, so I surmise some 20mb + is
written to the C drive in other folders

I wonder about that. Do have a look at the Control Panel "Add and Remove
programs". There appear to be less than 400Mb right? This really affect my
decision to buy this laptop.

You need around 2 gig available to install Office 2007 and as far as I know
there isn't a way around it. I encountered this during the beta. I almost
had enough but thought they weren't serious and tried anyway only to find
out they were serious. ;-)

You could move any files temporarily or uninstall other applications to make
the necessary room and them move the files/reinstall the software after the
Office 2007 installation is complete. That's what I did.

Dear Beth;

I see. Look like the laptop which I intend to buy due to its portableness
can only be a dream since the HD space only 1.4GB free for users to
installed. Hard lucky indeed......:-(

If it only has a 4 GB HD I'd question whether it passes the other system
requirements. For example does it even have a 500 megahertz (MHz) processor
or higher or more than 256 megabyte (MB) RAM?

Here's a link for the requirements:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/products/HA101668651033.aspx

If you only meet the minimum requirements then I suspect you wouldn't be
happy with the results. I ran Office 2007 on the minimum requirements during
the beta and boy was it slow! Starting an Office application was agonizing
and the new Live Preview wasn't exactly "live", more like a 10 second or
more delay.

Hi Beth;

It had met all the requirements on that page except the HD.

Here is a little of my laptop specification:
Intel Celeron M 900Mhz Processor
512kb L2 Cache
4GB HD
512 DDR2 667 Hz Ram (Maz 2GB)

Guess the issue now only rest on the HD. Hard luck right? Just because of
the HD, I can't buy that PC unless I shift to Office 2003 which I had no
intention of.

Well you know...a hard drive in a laptop is easy to replace and you could
probably pick one up for around $100.

Sorry I don't have any other ideas.

Dear Beth;

Sadly to say that the HD here cannot be replaced with an extra capacity. Its
limited to 4GB size. Thats why its is portable. Its not the normal 2.5" HD of
ordinary laptop.
