spaces in Word for Mac X

I wonder if you can help me

I use Office vX on my Mac and very good it is.

One problem - I get loads of extra spaces when I type and have to do a
search and replcae at the end, replacing two spaces with one.

Is there any way you can prevent these extra spaces happening in the
first place?

I'd be ever so grateful for any help
