In Word 2008 how do you set it up so that there is automatically only one space between words and after periods?

I'm really not clear about what you're asking...

If you're typing the best option is to only press the spacebar only once in
the first place. There is no "magic elixir" that will automatically decide
for you whether you actually meant to press it twice.

If you have an existing document where the spacebar has been over-exercised,
again, there is no built-in automatic feature that will replace 2 spaces
with a single. The most useful tool is Find & Replace. Type 2 spaces into
the Find What: field, type 1 space in the Replace With: field & have at it.

Hi,

Look in Word > Preferences > Spelling and Grammar
In the Grammar section of the preferences pane, next to Writing Style is
a pop-up and next to that is a button called Settings. Click the
Settings button.

That opens up the Grammar Settings dialog. In the lower half of Grammar
Settings, in the "Require" section are 3 pop-ups. Change the "Spaces
required between sentences" from "Don't check" to 1.

Click OK and OK to get back to Word.

You can't :)

You can set the Grammar checker to check for it, as Jim has explained.

And you can use Find>Replace to put them right if you find problems.

But you can't make Word automatically correct it while you type.

Hope this helps
