Spam Mailbox Cleanup

Sulu

I have a spam mailbox that I have to go into and delete messages manually.
I would like it to autmatically delete any messages that are older than a
month and I would like this to happen on the server side without having
Outlook open. The mailbox resides on an Exchange 2000 server (SP2). I
appreciate any help on this.

Why not just set an AutoArchive property (Right-click the folder ->
properties -> Autoarchive) on that folder that says to permanently delete
anything over a month old. Have AutoArchive configured to run once a week
and not prompt you. It will only run when Outlook is open, but it will
happen in the background and you should rarely notice it.

With this solution I would have to dedicate a PC to have Outlook open all
the time which is not what I was looking for. What about recipient policies
on the server? Can I do it with those?

You can also in Outlook configure a (server based) Wizard Rule to
automatically move the messages into the Deleted Items folder. Then you can
set a retention policy on the mailbox by in Active Directory Users and
Computers and set it to empty the Deleted Items folder after x number of
days.

Oh. I guess this isn't a mailbox that anybody logs into? In that case, I'd
go with Roady's suggestion and create a server-based rule that just deletes
everything. In fact, if you have the rule "Permanently Delete" instead of
just moving to Deleted Items you won't even have to worry about emptying the
Deleted Items folder.

Indeed. My spambox is also the box where I let my confirmation mails go to
for one time weblogons. Therefor I didn't suggest a permanent delete rule.
In case you don't even have that mails send to that mailboxes I would
definitely go for a permanently delete rule; saves you some configuration
hassle and everything can be done from within Outlook.
