Spanish Punctuation

How do I get the accent mark over a letter when typing
Spanish words such as "anos"?

Use insert symbol and see what the shortcut is listed as for next time
or
having inserted the character save the revised word as an autocorrect entry
for anos

I have somehow deleted the "symbol" option from the "insert" menu (I was in
fact, trying to sort out Spanish punctuation).

Any ideas how I can get back to the "symbol" dialogue box.

You can use ANSI/ASCII ALT-number shortcuts.

á = ALT 160
é = ALT-130
í = ALT-161
ó = ALT-162
ú = ALT-163
ñ = ALT-164

E.g. for ñ, hold down the ALT key as you type 164.

It is Ctrl+~ (which on a UK keyboard is Shift #) then remove fingers and
press n for lower case or shift+n for upper case.

Thanks for the reply, Graham (what are you doing up at this
hour, btw?)...

On my keyboard ~ is shift + ` (to the left of 1). Anyway,
I've tried but I can't do it... lower case, that is.

Graham is in the UK (as his post should suggest), where it is 7 hours later
than where you are (from your message header: Date: Fri, 11 Jul 2003
01:27:47 -0700). In participating in NGs, it is helpful to remember that
other participants may be anywhere in the world.

I'm well aware of where he is.

These key combinations are in two parts: the "setup key," and the letter. In
this case, the setup key is Ctrl+~ (that is, Ctrl+Shift+` on your US
keyboard). You press that combination and release it. Then you press n to
get ñ and Shift+n (i.e., N) to get Ñ.

I don't know why this is so hard!?! It takes a lot of
practice, for sure. Out of 25 tries I got exactly 3 ñ, 2 Ñ
(by mistake) and the rest were duds. Well, I wasn't
bringing up new word docs like I did last night, so at least
I'm making progress.

There may be an easier way but the following will work.

é = hold the alt key and type 130 on th enumber keypad
á = hold the alt key and type 160 on th enumber keypad
í = hold the alt key and type 161 on th enumber keypad
ó = hold the alt key and type 162 on th enumber keypad
ú = hold the alt key and type 163 on th enumber keypad
ñ = hold the alt key and type 164 on th enumber keypad

Happy typing!

So why did you ask what he was doing up "at this hour"? It was 9:38 AM in
Manchester.

I was thinking it was 6+AM his time. It was late and I was
only adding the hours I needed to get slightly off the East
Coast... My geography was correct, my math (in terms of
time zones) wasn't.

I'm not an optimist or a pessimist, the glass is twice as big as it needs to be.

You must learn to let go ..... of the keyboard .... between the two parts of
this combination :)
CTRL+Shift+` - HANDS OFF!!!! - n = ñ
CTRL+Shift+` - HANDS OFF!!!! - Shift+n = Ñ
