Spasmodic Word Crash on Save

B

Brent Wheeler

Hate to write on this but desperation territory.

I run Office XP Standard on Home Edition XP, all updates to both OS and
Office up to date, 512 k, 120 gb of space etc. Upon attempting to save, Word
periodically gives me the XP version of the screen of death "We're sorry,
Word has encountered a problem and has to close", plus the routine report
off to Uncle Bill in Redmond. Word then closes. At that point the main file
gone (upon trying to open we get "invalid filename try bla bla) and the
backup file is corrupted.

The only thing I can see that is sometimes consistent with this happening is
it is usually in documents where I have been embedding Excel objects via
paste special, or linking to external spreadsheets - but by no means does it
happen everytime, or predictably or in a pattern - hence all the usual
troubleshooting things get me nowhere.

Any clues - and I do appreciate all the time people take to post here - its
excellent.

Thanks
