known by another name?

Thanks for the information. Someone had told me the feature was available with an upgrade to Office XP. They failed to tell me it was a 3rd party product

I plan to only use it to write papers. Is the version 6 adequate of should I go for version 7

Thanks again

Office XP does have Speech Recognition without a third party product.

Hi Martin,

Take a look in Add/Remove Programs and check the Office Add/Remove
Features for Office Shared Features\Alternative User Input. Is Speech
listed?

If you have Office 2000 then you qualify for an upgrade for Office XP:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q290540

The Students and Teaches Edition does not have an upgrade and AFAIK
all editions have Speech Recognition.

If you are planning on upgrading then why not go with Office 2003? It
also has Speech Recognition and the Students and Teachers Edition can
be installed on three computers:

"UPGRADE PATHS FOR OFFICE 2003 "
http://66.102.7.104/search?q=cache:...g+products"+site:microsoft.com&hl=en&ie=UTF-8

"What's in Office 2003 Editions?"

This is good news but I'm still not clear about the ugrade options. The web site listed the Student Teacher as a new customer only.

That is correct. Student and Teacher's Editions are not available for
upgrade. Compare the prices, it's cheaper than the upgrade editions.

But also note in the past the Student and Teacher's Editions have not
qualified for an upgrade.
