The users would have to have a high speed connection or you have to reduce
the file size.

To get an idea of how long it take to download files of certain sizes, see
http://www.ycoln-resources.com/services/
and select File Download Time Calculator

That's about 580kb more than I will wait to load. I think you have to be
really careful imposing music on your viewers. I keep my speakers turned off
and many do the same.

That is the decision I ended up making. I have nixed the music. I thought
about it and realized that I won't wait that long so why would anyone else.

I have a somewhat related question.

I have newsletters that can be download and I'd kill to have a 580KB file!
How about 4.5MB? Now that I checked out that site I can post the approximate
time beside the document.

If someone does a right click and Save target as, is there a way that will
show the % of downloaded file? I like that but admittedly, I'm a geek.

Would require some type server side scripting. However Windows users will
see a dialog which shows download progress.

Oh, okay. so I don't have to do anything, it will "automatically" read that
instead of just watching the little file slowly leaping across to the
folder? (Slowly for me until tomorrow! I'm finally going broadband! Wah
hoooooooooooooooo)

Have you zipped the files?

If zipping significantly reduces the file size, you might offer both zipped
and unzipped. Dial-up uses might be willing to take the extra step to unzip
if the file comes down faster.
