Office 2004 Entourage is working very, very slowly. Changing view between
E-mail and Calendar might take as much as three to four seconds! What's
going on?

I have a PowerBook G4, MacOS 10.3.8, 867 MHz and 512 MB SDRAM.

Hi Janne,

If you have lot of items in the inbox you might see this issue. Try to move
the mails to a different folder and check. You can also try and rebuild the
database once and check. To rebuild the database launch Entourage with the
option key pressed.

As a point of reference, I have a system running 10.3.8, 800 Mhz G4 and I
have 3021 items in my main inbox. It takes less than half a second for me
to switch between Mail and Calendar. My money says that it's something
else, like the database (it was a good recommendation to rebuild the
database), or an OS failure of some kind.

I've rebuilt the database (303 MB) but shifting between different view
windows is still very, very slow.
What can I do?

Ok, let's ask some questions: Are you experiencing any other slowness with
your computer? How's websurfing? What about the rest of your email? Does
it take a long time to create a new email window? What about switching
between mail folders or Usenet groups? What about boot time?

No, I can't say I am.
How's websurfing?

Haven't noticed any problems.

to create a new email window?

No problem.
What about switching between mail folders or Usenet groups?

Occasionally slow but not always.
What about boot time?

I can't say I've noticed any change, but it is rather slow!

Ok, so next lets toss the Entourage preferences.

First, quit out of Entourage.

Next, look inside your home folder. Inside there is your Library folder.
Inside that is your Preferences folder. Inside that is your Microsoft
folder. Inside that is your Entourage Preferences file. Delete that file.

Relaunch Entourage and see if your speed increases.

Stu,

No, tossing the Entourage preferences didn't change the performance.

A detail: Simply clicking between the E-mail view and the Calendar view and
the Address Book and so on without changing anything or using a function is
pretty quick. But if, for example, I search for a specific person's address
and then after that change to the Calendar view or E-mail view, then it
takes ages (many seconds).

Have a clue??

I really don't. I tried what you said in my Entourage and didn't have any
slowness at all. Hmmm. I wish I could think of something else to try.
Maybe toss the application and reinstall from the CD? I hate to reduce it
to something so drastic, but I have no other ideas.

Maybe others who read this will have suggestions?

I have a new Apple Cinema HD 23" display connected to my computer. Could
that have anything do with my problems??

I talked to Apple support earlier but they could detect any problems in my
OSX-system (ver 10.3.8), so they referred me back to Microsoft. So here I am
again.

New example: I looked up a phone number in my Address Book, and after
clicking on the E-mail icon to go back to the E-mail view it took 6 seconds!
(I was checking with my watch in hand!)

I have Office 2004, my database file is 303 MB and I have 734 Contacts in my
Address Book.

What should I do?

Hallo?! Anybody out there?!
Problem: Entourage is very - and I mean VERY - slow.
Example: I looked up a phone number in my Address Book, and after clicking
on the E-mail icon to go back to the E-mail view it took 6 seconds!
I have tossed the preferences, rebuilt the database and talked to Apple
support. Nothing has helped.

Best,

Are your other applications also acting up? If so, you might have a problem
with the hard drive upon which Entourage is installed.

But before you check that...

As a matter of good practice, if it's been a long time since you last
defragmented your hard drive, you might consider doing so. Doing this puts
all the files on your drive in continuous blocks -- as opposed to having
bits and pieces of files all over the hard drive.

It's generally not a risky operation unless you have very little free space
(and in which case it takes forever). However, to be safe, backup your
important stuff (Documents folder, music, etc.) to another volume or to
CD-ROM/DVD.

Then, boot from a startup CD (usually Install Disk 1 that came with your
Mac) so that the hard drive upon which OS X is installed is NOT running the
machine. Then open up Disk Utility and defragment the volume. It can take
anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon how full your
drive is.

When that's done, reboot the machine normally and test Entourage. If it's
still a problem, then I suggest launching the Hardware Test program and
allowing it to run a full test on your machine -- all hardware will be
tested, and it will inform you if it finds problems (and usually fixes
them).

Hope this helps.
