Spell check continually selects incorrect language

MS Word 2003 SP-1.
I've done all steps to force US English as the *only* language that should
be used for all operatins, including spell check. Nonetheless, Word continues
to pick French when performing spell check.

Please help!

Open a document in which this problem occurs. Press Ctrl+A to
select all of the text, click on Tools | Language | Set Language
| <choose your language> | uncheck the "Detect language
automatically" and "Do not check spelling or grammar" boxes |
Default | OK.
