Spell check doesn't register contractions

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) My spell check doesn't register any contractions as being correct. How can I fix this problem?

Add them to your custom dictionary.

Are you sure the custom dictionary is working?

It keeps saying my "custom dictionary" is not available...

That's what I thought. It actually means that the Custom Dictionary is
corrupt.

Delete it (use Spotlight in Finder to find a file named exactly "Custom
Dictionary", because the location can vary).

Then follow the procedure in the following Word Help topic to create a new
one:
"Create and use a custom dictionary"

For simplicity, create the new one in the same location the old one was.
