spell check not working in Word 2003

I recently got a new Sony Vaio VGN-TZ36GN and downgraded from Vista to
XP. Upon loading Office 2003, my spell check in Word does not work. I
have set the language to Australian (doesn't work but didn't on the old
laptop either), checked all the obvious areas, and still does not pick
up anything wrong. Spell check works fine in Outlook. Any ideas? Thanks

English (Australian). When I try and change the default language to
Australian in Word, via either default and normal.dot, it doesn't do it,
it keeps defaulting back to US
