spell check wont work on word 2004 for mac

We recently installed microsoft office for students on our mac. The
spell checker function does not work and appears to be disabled.
(When I look under word/preferences the spelling and grammer option is
not bold - and when I try to click on it nothing seems to happen)

Any suggestions?

I think it's a corrupt preferences file. See here for the standard
troubleshooting tips, one of them should fix it.
