Spell Check Working Only in Part of Document

In a Word 2010 document spell check is working only in parts, and I don't know why. In part of the document, missspelled words are underlined in red and picked up when I run spell check. In other parts, I could type, say, "abgdyz" and it would not be flagged. Any ideas? Thanks.
