Spell checker does not work properly

Running Office XP with all patches on a Windows 98
workstation. When I do a spell check on a word that is
misspelled it will not pick up the misspelling. I have
tried turning on and off the suggest from main dictionary
only but this does not help. Please advise. Thanks.

1.Select the text.
2.Tools > Language > Set Language
3. uncheck the "Do not check spelling..." box. OK
