Spell check does not work in graphics AFAIK. Webster's does.

Paste the pre-proofed phrase into the graphic.

It should work inside of Smart Art Graphics. Assuming you have the option
checked to check spelling as you type, you should be getting the redline
underneath misspelled words.
The keyboard shortcut is F7. Are you in Power Point or another office product?
