Spellcheck grayed out

I never really checked this in all these years (Office 97) but now that my
nephew needs my Word...
My spellcheck is all grayed out. How do I or can I get that
function...functioning?

I just inserted the Office 97 CD and found the spellchecker unchecked and
checked it...viola...
