Spellcheck language keeps changing as I check!

Thought I could just spend an hour or so scanning and OCRing a few pages
from a botany book: HO HO!

I had to give up.

As fast as I could add the latin words to the dictionary, the spellchecker
kept swinging from English to French and to Spanish. It does not matter
what the default is set to: it does not take any notice if 'automatic
language recognition' is deselected!

Is this some sicko virus writer's idea of a joke, or is it a bug in our
version of Word (2002 SP3)?

Help!

Have further investigated and discovered another place where the automatic
language detection tick box lurks:

in the Formatting /Normal/Modify dialogue the option is ticked and greyed
out!
I am administrator, and have added my own user ID with full permissions, and
taken Ownership too, but the option still remains greyed out!

Grrrr!

It's of no help to you, of course, but I get exacly the same problem with
Word 2003. I can be in the middle of a document and the laguange changes
from English to UK, sometimes to English US, but often to French - once or
twice to othre languages, which I've forgotten - maybe it was Spanish, on
reflection.
It's really annoying and can be confusing until you spot what has happened.

I hope someone comes up with a 'reason why'...

Thanks for the backup Tomcat: today I even noticed that some of the hotmail
e-mail site was coming out in French - but there may have been a local
problem at the time as I could not download my hotmail either, but it is
coming through ok at the moment.

Any more advice from the 'Techies' out there: especially on how to get the
Normal template format options to ungrey out the 'choose language
automatically' box?

Salut!
Gracias!

Thanks for the handy article link Stefan,

I had not been aware that there were more settings under 'Office Tools' -
nor indeed that there was an 'Office Tools' as it does not show up as a
folder in Windows Explorer, only in the Start menu programmes which I rarely
look at!

The Office Tool language settings did indeed have French and Spanish enabled
in addition to the UK English default, and I have removed these as per the
article instructions. However, I would have liked to be able to check
spellings in these languages from time to time, so it is a bit of a 'bodge'
to disable them completely.

The article tells us to turn off all the automatic language formatting
options, but does not mention the WORD: 'formatting and
styles'/Normal/modify/format/'detect language automatically' tick box, that
is still ticked and still greyed out on our system.

How can I 'ungrey' this nuisance setting, and why is it greyed out in the
first place?

Cheers,

S

I don't believe you need to disable these other languages, just make sure
that the correct default is set for Windows (and turn off auto detection).

Thankyou Suzanne,

But as I said: I can't turn off automatic recognition because in the
Word/Format/Normal/Modify/Format dialogue there is a box which is ticked for
automatic recognition but it is greyed out and nobody can tell me how to get
it ungreyed!

And Stefan: I have read the article carefully and followed all the measures
therein, but the dialogue remains ticked and greyed out.

Where is the dialogue by which I can take back the right to tick this box or
not for myself?

I believe the option is greyed out simply because the setting isn't
applicable to styles; that it appears to be checked means nothing (I see
it too). Just turn it off in Tools | Language | Set Language.
