Spellcheck trouble with Word

D

Doug Kanter

Platform: Win XP Pro with Office 2000. Not networked in any way. Two users.
My son, a limited user, says spell check isn't working with Word. The usual
"finished" error message comes up, but he KNOWS there are misspellings. He's
even created a few, just to be sure, and these are NOT words which have more
than one spelling in English.

Won't get to see the machine until the weekend. What clues should I be
looking for? The only clue so far is that my ex-wife had a local computer
shmexpert do some sort of work on the machine which included installing XP
Pro. Previously, the machine had Win 98 SE with Office 2000. No idea whether
he reformatted & installed fresh, or what.

Hi Doug,

Have him check these settings/values, etc.

This behavior can occur if any one of the following is true:

The value data for the SharedFilesDir registry value does not contain a
trailing backslash (\) in the following registry key (that is, there should
be a backslash immediately after Shared Tools ):

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools
Absence of this trailing backslash prevents location of the Csapi3t1.dll
file and causes the spelling checker not to function properly.

Manual Edit:

Go to Start/Run/EXPAND X:\i386\CSAPI3T1.DL_ C:\CSAPI3T1.DLL (Where X is your
CD-Rom drive letter). And then copy it to: Program Files\Common
Files\Microsoft Shared\Proof

Or download the file here: Replace the Csapi3t1.dll file
http://www.tech-pro.co.uk/howto_010.html

An error occurred while the spelling was being checked.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q224176

Checkpoint: Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools

In the right pane where it reads: SharedFilesDir, verify that it reads:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared under Data.

csapi3t1.dll does not come into play with English spellchecking on Office
2000. So getting a new copy of it or moving it around won't make any
difference.
