Spellcheck won't stop!

Word 2003 on Win XP

I have a 6 page Word doc, about 200k in size, containing two pages of
pictures. Problem is that spellcheck is constantly running, (as shoen by
icon in task-bar) which is draining resouces and making editing the doc
almost impossible. I've deselected automatic checking whilst writing but
it's still going.

Anyone know how to make it stop?

This comes up again and again, but I don't think the icon really reflects
any activity of the spell-checker. AND any resources it uses are pretty
minimal. How does the status-bar icon interfere with you editing the
document?.

If you have multiple languages enabled for office editing, you could try
turning off language detection.

I seem to have missed the original post in this thread. Was OP referring to
that annoying little book in the lower right-hand part of the screen with
(variously) a pencil moving across it, a red check mark, and a red "X"? If
so, there's a way to get rid of it which, unfortunately, I've forgotten.

For me, the icon disappears if I clear the box for "Check spelling as you
type" on the Spelling & Grammar tab of Tools | Options.

Tried that many, many times. No matter what I do that demon book is still
there...
