have just installed word 08' and trying to bring documents created from older versions of word into current program. this is working , but spelling and grammar check will not turn onto the old document. only works if new info is typed at start of page. Are you referring to the actual Spelling & Grammar check or to the "Check as
you type" feature that provides the squiggly underlining?

Some sections of your document must be marked as "do not check spelling or
grammar". To get the spell checker to work for the entire document, click on
Edit>Select All (or press Cmd+a), then go to Tools>Language and make sure
the box next to "Do not check spelling or grammar" is blank; if it is not,
click it as many times as necessary to make the tick go away. Close the
dialogue, and the spell checker should work as exopected.

Yours is the second report I have seen about this: it would appear that we
have a new bug.

What language are you working in? (Go to Tools>Language>Set Language and
see which language is highlighted when you click in the text -- that's what
determines whether the spell-checker will work or not).

Also check that "Do not check spelling an grammar" is NOT switched on in
that dialog box.

Hope this helps

"Language" is one of the properties of text in Word. If the language
property is wrong, the spelling checker will be wrong or disabled.

Select all the text in the document, then go to Tools>Language>Set language
and check what language your text is set to. While you're at it, click the
"Default" button to set your Normal template to the same language.

Go to Format>Style... And check what language your styles are set to
(particularly Normal style -- everything else inherits from Normal). While
you are in there, check the "Add to template" checkbox to write that change
back to your Normal template.

That will fix all future documents.

You may need to change every old document.

That should fix it.
