Greetings Everyone,

For some reason I can not add new words to the dictionary in any of my MS
Office applications. Can anyone tell me how to fix this? Thanks in advance
for your assistance.

How are you trying to add the words? The most usual way is tell
Spell Check to add to the dictionary. This is not the MS
dictionary but your personal one, usually called CUSTOM.DIC. You
can have more than one personal dictionary but you have to tell
the program about it. I believe it is possible to edit a
personal dictionary since it is just a sorted plain text file.

It is possible that your custom.dic file is corrupt. In Word 2003 go to
Tools, Options, Spelling and Grammar tab. Click on the Custom Dictionary
button. In the next window if you have more than one custom dictionary,
select the one labeled "default". Try clicking on the Modify button. If the
dictionary opens, the file is OK. If the dictionary does not open, likely
the file is corrupt. If the dictionary does open, check to see if the words
you think were not added, were actually added.

Thanks Don MI. I have done that and cannot modify it. How do a fix this if
it is in fact corrupt?

What happens exactly? Are you saying you can't add a word because the
"Add" command is disabled? If that's the case then first make sure
your custom dictionary is read only. Locate your custom dictionary and
make sure Read Only is selected in the file properties or in a read
only location/folder on your computer.

Please post all follow-up questions to the newsgroup. Requests for
assistance by email can not be acknowledged.

Thanks Beth. I went in and tried that as well. It didn't make a difference.
I added a "new" dictionary adn made it as default. It's working now. I
really appreciate it. Could you please check out my previous posting right
below this on for another problem I'm having.
