Spinning an object on the vertical axis

I would like an object such a 3D diagram to rotate vertically so that it
looks like it is spinning on the vertical axis. (I do not want the effect
you get with the Spin custom animation.) Does any-one know how to do this.

I don't believe powerpoint can spin objects in true 3D.

For this you would need to import your diagram into a 3D program, animate
it, save it as a movie, and then insert that into powerpoint.
