Splash screen at startup

Is there anyway to disable the splash screen that pops up
when you start word?
Or even better would be some way to make word by default
start up as a minimized window.

You can disable the splash screen with a Registry hack (note that this
doesn't save any startup time). If you created a desktop shortcut for Word,
you can modify the shortcut properties to make it start mimimized. You can
also modify the properties of a Start Menu shortcut or Quick Launch bar
icon.
