Split bar has disappeared

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel I want to be able to split a document and view two sections at the same time. However, the split bar that used to be at the top of the vertical scroll bar is no longer there. When I go to the Window menu the "Split" item is greyed out. How do I get this function back?

First confirm that you have both Office (12.2.4) & OS X (10.6.2) fully
updated, that disk permissions have been repaired & that you've recently
restarted your Mac. It's pointless to chase symptoms otherwise.

If the problem persists following that try going to View> Customize Toolbars
& Menus . On the Toolbars page click the name of the Menu Bar (not the
checkbox), then click the Reset button. See whether that restores it.

Should it not, come back for other suggestions.

OK... You'll have to break out the big guns :)

As a test, hold Shift while launching Word to see if there is any
difference. If there is it suggests that your prefs file may be damaged or
corrupt. Follow the procedure described here:

Bob,
Hey, it works :) I started up with Shift pressed and my split bar has reappeared. Thanks a million

I hope you followed through with the rest of my reply ‹ Shift/Launch is just
a troubleshooting technique, not a fix.

I'm slightly late to this party; sorry about that. I would just like to
add one more detail, which you might find useful in case this behaviour
reappears: Word does not allow you to split a document if the Navigation
Pane is visible, so you need to disable it if you want to split the
document window.

Hey, thanks for your update, Michel. I had the same problem and did not
realize that it was just because I had the preview pane open. I hardly use
it, but this document is large, so I wanted it on. I turned it off, and my
split screen came back!

Thanks again.
