Split Database Security

As Rick mentioned below, you need to get a copy of the Security FAQ from
Microsoft. There is a link to it on the Security page of my website. In your
case the most likely problem is that permissions were not removed from the
Users group.

I developed a database that resides on a server and is
accessed by 18 different work stations. On the advice of
several folks, I split the database into front and back
end and distributed it to the various work stations. I
then used a short cut to refer to the security file that
resides on the server with the back end for user
permissions. Everything seemed to work fine until I
manually clicked on the front end copy that I had
installed on each of the work station C drives. It just
opend automatically with no prompt for security. On
computers with Access 2002, I was able to use the Work
Group Administrator (tools, security, Work Group
Administrator) to "join" the security file that is on the
server. On workstations with Access 2000, I was not given
that option on the Security tool bar. The only thing I
could do was to set the Admin password...so when you
clicked on the front end copy it prompted you for a log
in and password. Admin and the associated password I
picked were the only ones that would grant access. When
you clicked on the short cut I placed on the desk top, it
used the parameters I set up in the Security File to open
the database.
Did I make an error when I split the database?
Will I have to do this each time I re distribute an
updated copy to the work stations?
Is the work group administrator just not available for
Access 2000? or is there another way to join a Work Group?

An absolutely essential step when applying security is to test afterwards to
make sure the file cannot be opened unless joined to the appropriate work group
file. You obviously missed a step in setting up security if it can be opened
this way.

From what I have read in these groups the wizard apparently never produces a
properly secured app. You need to get the security FAQ paper from MS and start
over.
