"Spooling" printer

I have a long (100+) page document that *did* print without difficulty. I
added seven figures (6 Word files and 1 .pdf) and now when I attempt to print
the file, I get a message that the printer is "spooling." This seems to go on
forever, so finally I cancel the print job, but in so doing Word (2000)
crashes and I have to re-start Word and recover the document. I have printed
each of the figures separately, and they all print without any problem. I
have set the document template to Normal and unchecked the "update" box. Any
suggestions?

I have discovered the miracle of "Background printing" and how turning it off
when printing large, complex documents eliminates the "spooling" problem.

RE: Spooling printer

Thanks for this. I've just had exactly the same problem - a long, complex
highly formatted document which grew to 101 pages and then hung Word when
printing - and of course I was out of the office for a few days when it was
discovered! Seems a bit remiss of Microsoft to not have posted a fix to this
bug...
