Spreadsheet Doesn't Display When Clicking Link

I am experiencing an odd behavior in Excel 2003 SP1.
When I click on a xls link, either in an email, the
desktop, or windows explorer, Excel opens the spreadsheet
but the worksheet is not visible. All menu items are
shown but cannot be clicked. The only thing that can be
done is to close the application. At that point the
spreadsheet displays momentarilly prior to Excel closing.
If I open Excel and then open a file using file=>open, it
works fine.
I was wondering if anyone had experienced this and/or had
any suggestions. I have alreday tried deleting and
recreating the file association for an xls extension.
Thanks for any help.

Hi
try the following:
goto 'Tools-Options-General " and uncheck "Ignore other Applications"
Exit Excel and try again

If this doesn't work try to re-register Excel

1. Close Excel first and
2. On the Windows Taskbar
2.1 Start>Run "excel.exe /unregserver"(no quotes)>OK.
2.2 Start>Run "excel.exe /regserver"(no quotes)>OK.

Hi Frank.
No change after trying your suggestions. I even went as far as uninstalling
and reinstalling Excel (not Office completely however).
Very frustrating.
Thanks your for help.

Frank:
I tried your suggestions, but the results are the same. In fact I tried
uninstalling Excel (not Office completely) and reinstalling it, but still no
luck.
Sorry for the delay in responding, but I actually thought I had last week,
but didn't get a chance to check back after the holiday until now).
Thanks,
Lee

Frank:
I resolved the problem by completely uninstalling Office and reinstalling
it. While I still don't know what caused the problem, I will monitor any
updates, service packs, and add-ins to see if the problem reoccurs.
