Squiggly blue underlines?

Using Word 2002 SP-1.

I know that squiggly red lines indicate spelling mistakes, and squiggly
green lines indicate doubtful grammar. But what are the squiggly blue
lines for? They keep coming and going without any apparent rhyme or
reason, and they're driving me nuts!

they're to do with formatting consistency

If I'd known, I would have looked in Help for "Formatting Consistency".
(There's no entry in Help for "squiggly blue lines" )

Squiggly (red/blue/green) lines in the search engine would be an obvious
improvement! I can never seem to find anything there either.

If I search for "underlines," the second hit is "Show or hide wavy
underlines," one article that actually addresses these. The fourth article
listed is "What do the underlines in my document mean?" This article cover
red, green, blue, and purple, plus the purple dots that indicate smart tags.

that was my exact response, so i went and checked out purple underlines in
word (yes, i know, i need a life ... but they're nothing more than
followed hyperlinks was really hoping for something a bit more esoteric

No, no, no! The *wavy* purple underlines are something else (though not
anything the ordinary user is likely to see):

Purple wavy underlines (wavy vertical lines may also appear in the margin)

In an XML document, Word uses purple wavy vertical lines and underlines to
indicate XML structure that does not adhere to the XML schema that is
attached to the document.

Note XML features, except for saving documents as XML with the Word XML
schema, are available only in Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003 and
stand-alone Microsoft Office Word 2003.

There are also dotted purple underlines:

Purple dotted underlines

Smart tags appear with purple dotted underlines beneath text. You can use
smart tags to perform actions in Word that you'd normally open other
programs to do.

For those who are interested in XML or smart tags, Word MVP Bill Coan has
written articles on both. The XML article is available for download from

oh, i checked out Help in 2002 not 2003 ... are purple wavy underlines
available in 2002 too?

Probably not, since XML is new in Word 2003.
