starting numbers at 1

How do you define a numberlist in your template to start each list at 1? When creating the style, there seems to be no option on the bullets and number dialog to request that.

I am creating an indented number list. Since I can't seem to specify that a new list starts at 1, I have to change it after creation of the style, by selecting bullets and numbering from the format menu. When I do this and select restart at 1, my indent disappears.

There's obviously something I am missing, but it is very frustrating.

The entering argument is Word's numbering is very frustrating.

First cardinal rule - Don't use the bullets and numbering icon and don't use
Format>Bullets and Numbering.

Use styles. See:

I don't suppose the users of my template will mind going to that command on the toolbar. But why oh why isn't the WORD default to restart numbered lists at 1? Wouldn't that be much more logical
