Startup Error

When I start Word 2000 ver 9.0 I get the error message "Word could not create work file. Check temp environment variable". What does this mean and what is going on? How or what do I do to correct this so I do not get this message?
Many Thanks.

In your Check System Properties, on the Advanced tab check your "Environment Variables".

It sounds like the Temp folder is either invalid or it points to a folder you don't have sufficient permissions for.

Microsoft has posted a response to this problem, which I have, too. The problem is that I couldn't understand the solution. It said that the problem was with the registry, and that the Data Subkey was likely corrupted, then referred to something about the "normal" file. Can you now suggest a solution to this problem?

See http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm for information
about renaming Normal.dot and rebuilding the Registry Data key.

If the Data key continues to corrupt then it sounds like something is causing it to corrupt.

Take a look under Tools/Templates and Add-ins. Do you have any add-ins listed? If so then they will be located in one of the Startup folders. The location of the Office\Startup folder is in the installation path, the Word Startup folder can be found by going to Tools/Options/File Locations. (You can also use Windows Search to locate the files)

Once found, move them out of the folder to prevent them from loading when Word starts.

Also, as of Word 2000, Word can have COM add-ins. COM are added via the Registry rather than the Startup folders. To determine whether or not you are using COM Add-In you can add the "COM Add-in" command to your toolbar:

- Right-click any toolbar and select Customize
- On the Commands tab, select the Tools category
- Locate COM Add-Ins on the right
- Drag/Drop to a location of your choice

For more information on COM Add-Ins, see this article: http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/Customization/CheckIfAddinsInstalled.htm
