Status box

I can't seem to find how I request for the 'status box' showing which
accounts have been accessed and the download status. I feel a right idiot!

You mean the Send/Receive dialog?
Tools-> Send/Receive-> Send/Receive Settings-> Show Progress...

Pressing the Send/Receive button or F9 will also show this dialog. In this
dialog you'll also find an option to pin it so you can continue to monitor
it.
