Status column is wrong

I've added the Status column to several projects to see how it works.
In one project a lot of tasks that were slated to be finished in March
and have not been started yet show "Future Task". Why would it be
doing this? The help menu says, "if the task start date is greater
than the status date, then the Status field contains Future Task."
Question is, what is the "status date"? Maybe I'm missing something
there. On the other hand, other projects that have incomplete tasks
from the past show "late", as I would expect.

Naomi --

Click Project - Project Information and examine the Status Date. I'll bet
that the Status Date is earlier than the Start date of those Future tasks.

Thanks Dale and Ben, I found the status date and did a little research
on it. It is indeed set to an earlier date than those overdue tasks.
I don't know who put it in there, but I set it back to NA and
everything's cool now!
