step by step to produce a master and subdocuments

I want to make a master document from scratch, but can't work out how to make
subdocuments so I hoped someone might have a step by step instruction sheet.
I want to make a procedures manual with separate sections

I think both Steve Hudson and John McGhie have (collectively?) written a
long set of rules and restrictions that you need to adhere to... if you
want to use Master documents and survive the experience.

IIRC, the list was long, and if you followed the rules you forsook
practically all advantages that master documents might give you in the
first place.

Perhaps you can google it or find it on Steve's website.
