There are quite a few posts regarding the "the name of an element could not be found" issue when trying to open XLSX files on mac that do contain a pivot table.
I can reproduce the error on the mac the following way:
1. XLSX file created in Win Office 2007 with pivot table
2. File will not open on Mac Office 2008
3. Save the File in XLS format with "Save as" on Win Office 2007. No other changes to the file!
4. New XLS file with pivot table will open fine on Mac Office 2008
5. Save file as XLSX on Mac Office 2008
6. File will NOT open on Mac Office 2008 again! Same error as in Step 1.

This is Mac Office 12.2.1

Any ideas how to solve this?

First check that Win Office 2007 is fully updated. There is a series of
bugs in the XML code written by the early versions. It was fixed in a
service pack.

There was a bug in its "input/Output Filter". It would write bad code, but
since it also used the same module to read code, Excel 2007 could read the
bad code, so nobody found the bug until it started sending files to other
versions.

Also check out the "Known Issues" in Excel 2008 Help:

" You might encounter the following known issues with some PivotTable
reports.

PivotTable reports that exceed 30,000 rows and that are created by using
Excel 2007 for Windows do not open in Excel 2008 for Mac.

When you open a PivotTable report that references data in a workbook that is
closed and then update that PivotTable report, a message indicates that
Excel cannot open the PivotTable source file. To avoid this issue, open the
workbook that is referenced and then update the PivotTable report again."

There are still some bugs in that part of the works...

Cheers

If your WinXL2007 is fully updated, and this problem persists, I'd be happy to investigate it. Could you please send a copy of your workbook (created in step 1) to (e-mail address removed). Thanks!
